Could Reference Price Guidelines be on the Cards to Combat Customs Fraud?
As customs duty fraud increases on a nearly daily basis, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) is considering introducing reference price guidelines for imported goods to combat this rising pandemic. With fraud and corruption at an all time high, the industry is crying out for some governance, best practices and control to restore balance and ensure the smooth running or cross border trade.

Mr Ranga Reddi - Founder and Chairman of Nesh Freight
With 35 years’ experience in the African freight forwarding and clearing industry, Mr Ranga Reddi recalls his early days in the freight forwarding business when he earned R75 per month as a clerk in a clearing company.
He worked his way up through the domestic and export road and airfreight business and his service excellence and professionalism soon earned him a valuable reputation and a network of contacts within neighbouring African countries.
In August 1991, before the dawning of the new democracy in South Africa, Ranga saw an opportunity to start his own company and embraced it with his typical enthusiasm and attention to personal service. Naming the company after his two young sons, and with the support from his wife who “knew he could do it”, he stepped out of his comfort zone and established Nesh Freight International. Initially working from a Zozo hut without even a cupboard to store his documents, the company grew from strength to strength, moving to bigger premises in Alberton before opening the current offices in Wadeville in 1997.
As trade between African countries developed, Nesh Freight International won a significant contract in Zambia in 1994 which marked a new phase in the company’s growth. Since then, Nesh Freight International has established a permanent presence, both within key Zambian cities and at the border entry post.
Besides growing Nesh Freight International, Ranga is proud of the contribution his company has made towards building the Zambian economy, saying: “Since 1991 the improvement in the business and private sectors as well as the upliftment of community life styles has been encouraging and heart-warming. The Nesh Freight International team is grateful for the opportunity of playing a part in these historical developments.”
